Anton Florin’s team ZC Excess Futsal managed a historical win in the UEFA Futsal Cup as they beat Albanian side FK Tirana 4-2, becoming the first ever Maltese Futsal team to win a game in UEFA Futsal competitions.

ZC Excess scorers were Clint Cope, Manea Florin, James Ciangura and goalkeeper Ivan Baldacchino, with the latter scoring the fourth goal for the Maltese side with a well executed and precise kick from inside ZC Excess’ penalty area after the opponents were playing with the player-goalkeeper system in the dying moments of the game to save the result.

The Malta Futsal champions had their captain Romanian international Gabriel Dobre in fine shape confirming himself as the best ever Futsal player who has ever played indoor football in our country. His touches, dribbling and positional play helped the team managed by Edward Psaila and Mark Borg to register the first three points in Group B of this Preliminary Round of the UEFA Futsal Cup after yesterday’s defeat to BGA Futsal of Denmark 5-2.

Goalkeeper Brian Baldacchino also had a brilliant game with some point blank saves. Romanian Emil Andrei Raduco and Brazilian born Fabiano Bassi were also instrumental for ZC Excess’ win over FK Tirana who in the past have already met Maltese Futsal sides namely Hibernians in 2006 (7-3) and White Eagles in the last competition (4-3)

Glenn Bonello, Carlos Scicluna James Ciangura, Clint Cope and Nicola del Re were all instrumental with their next to perfect play which led to this historical win for their team but most importantly for Maltese Futsal.

FK Tirana went a goal ahead seven minutes in the game with a goal by Gjoni. ZC Excess replied with three consecutive goals by Cope, Manea and Ciangura and went into the half time talk with a comfortable two goal lead.

The visitors managed the 3-2 in the second half by Sina who gave a sign of hope for the Albanians to gain at least a point from this game. But goalkeeper Baldacchino, after some six splendid saves, achieved personal glory as he struck home from just inside his penalty area in the last 50 seconds of the game with a straight kick then ended softly between the unmanned Tirana’s goal for a 4-2 final score line.

Gabriel Dobre was yellow carded during the game so he will not be eligible to play in the third and final game of ZC Excess against FS Ilves Tampere of Finland which is scheduled for Thursday 19th August at 8pm. Dobre got his first Tournament booking in the game against BGA Futsal.

All the games of ZC Excess Futsal are being screened on a delayed basis on Melita’s new local sports channel Malta Stars Channel 614.

Referees: Robert Rogers (Ireland) and Balazs Farkas (Hungary)
