Jesmond Zammit has resigned as coach of Hamrun Spartans a few hours after the 2-0 defeat against Mqabba.

The former Dingli Swallows coach has ended his tenure after seven-and-a-half months in charge of the Spartans.

“I believe that this is the right time for me to go,” said Zammit. “I’m grateful for the support I found in this club from day 1 especially from the supporters but the decision is best for everyone.”

President Daniel Sullivan is expected to hold talks with former striker Stefan Sultana in the coming days to take charge till the end of the season.

Zammit said he was convinced the Spartans were in a good position to bounce straight back from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat which left them second from bottom with just 15 points from 19 games. Zammit’s assistant Vince Carbonaro is also to resign.
