Rabat too strong for Cottonera

Rabat   5

Cottonera   0

The final result is a clear indication that Rabat were the better outfit during the game which they dominated from start to the end and they are on maximum points from two games while Cottonera lost their opening game. Cottonera managed only three shots during the game and two of which came from free kicks.

After only two minutes Rabat nearly opened the score. Gianluca Bugeja released Mark Borg on the right flank who then crossed to Andreas Micallef  in the area and Cottonera keeper Alan Debono denied him with a diving save to a corner, while at the other end, Dale Valletta dribbled past an opponent and drove slightly over the bar from outside the area.

Rabat opened the score in the 6th minute as Micallef received the ball from a long drop-kick by keeper Damian Borg who then served Aleandro Brincat in the area who scored with a hard low drive, past Cottonera keeper Alan Debono and Micallef should have doubled for Rabat four minutes later as he failed to apply the killer touch when well-placed in the area after a Mark Borg perfect cross.

Cottonera won a free kick as Samuel Cauchi was fouled on the right flank and Andy Gili drove well off target and from another free kick taken by Valletta the ball was deflected by a defender and ended in Damian Borg’s waiting hands.

Rabat added two more goals between the 26th and 27th minutes. Mark Asciak scored with a header after a flag kick by Mark Borg and Micallef scored with a hard drive after a flag kick by the same player.

Cottonera then won a corner kick on the left flank which was well-taken by Carlos Desira and the ball was cleared to another corner, and in the last action before the break, Mark Borg served Micallef with a perfect cross in the area and Debono brought the house down with a spectacular save as he tipped the ball over the bar.

All the actions after the restart were all created by Rabat. Micallef square-passed the ball to Bugeja who missed the upright by inches from the edge of the area.

The score became 4-0 in the 52nd minute as Bugeja released Brincat in the area who after selling the dummy to the on-rushing keeper scored with a low drive.

Rabat scored their fifth goal on the hour. Bugeja dribbled his way past two opponents and was tripped as he entered the area and Brincat made no mistake from the penalty spot.

In the last action before the end Bugeja was fouled by Samuel Cauchi and the referee brandished the red card. Leone Ellul served Micallef with a short pass from the free kick on the left flank who after advancing Debono saved his hard drive to a corner.
