Enjoyable five-goal game

Mtarfa            3

Sta Venera    2

Although both teams did not set any houses on fire the game was quite enjoyable to watch as five goals were scored. Mtarfa had the edge over Sta Venera and deserved the three points. Sta Venera created more actions in the first period but it was Mtarfa who manged to build a slender lead and they also enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges after the resumption.

Sta Venera won a corner kick on the left flank and the cross by Francesco Santospagnuolo was cleared with difficulty.

Mtarfa opened the score in the 6th minute. Sta Venera keeper Luke Bonanno handled the ball outside the area, and was only showed a yellow card, Pedro Axisa served Matteo Grima with a short pass from the free kick and he scored with a hard low drive, and they doubled their lead on 20 minutes as Luke Muscat entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and netted with a hard and low diagonal shot.

Sta Venera then created three actions. Kieran Borg pouced on a loose ball outside the area and he missed the upright by inches from his rasping shot. Reuben Camilleri was then fouled on the left edge of the area and after the ball was partly cleared from the free kick by Santospagnuolo the same palyer missed the upright from the rebound and Camilleri dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and Mtarfa keeper James Aquilina neutralised the ball from his cross.

In another action by Mtarfa Muscat dribbled past an opponent on the right flank who the square-passed the ball to Axisa on the edge of the area and after Bonanno partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away to safety.

Just before the half time whistle Sta Venera reduced the gap as Simon Vella released Nicholas Talbot in the area and he scored with a low shot.

Very few were the actions worthy of note after the resumption although two more goals were scored. Matteo Grima served Axisa with a through ball in the area and Sta Venera keeper Bonanno foiled him as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball and he also saved a hard drive by Francesco Bricat after he ponced on a faulty clearance.

In the 47th minute Mtarfa regained their two-goal lead as Axisa entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and netted with a hard low drive.

In the  53rd minute Sta Venera reduced the gap once again. Camilleri dribbled past an oppnent just outside the area who the servedm Talbot with a square pass on the edge of the area and after Aquilina turned the ball to a corner from his hard drive the same palyer scored from inside the area after the flag kick by Santospagnuolo to make it 2-3.

Mtarfa kept trying for more. Muscat dribbled past an oppopnent outside the area and Bonanno turned the ball to a corner from his hard drive and Grima released substitute Liam Bugeja in the area and Bonanno foiled from further progression as he dived at his feet to smother the ball.
