Birżebbuġa     2

Xgħajra     1

This was a very low-key game and actions worthy of note were very scarce. The first period was yawn-laden as there were only four actions worthy of note and after the resumption there were seven actions worthy of note.

Birżebbuġa created the first action when Dean Frendo was fouled outside the area and after the ball was blocked by the defensive barrier from the free kick by Owen Pace the same player drove sligħtly over the bar from the rebound.

In the 8th minute Birżebbuġa opened the score. Kurt Camilleri released Frendo in the area and Xgħajra keeper Mikail Magri denied with a diving save to a corner  and after the flag kick by Andre’ Busuttil, Frendo scored with a header from inside the area.

In Xgħajra’s first action Jake Schembri served Xylon Fenech with a long throw-in and Birżebbuġa keeper Ristan Schembri saved his shot from the distance.

In the first half last action, Pace served Camilleri with a througħ ball in the area and Magri foiled him with a timely sortie as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball.

Birżebbuġa mounted the first two actions after the resumption.Camilleri served substitute Kaylon Borg in the area and Magri foiled him with a timely sortie and later saved a free kick by Busuttil after Camilleri was fouled on the rigħt flank.

In 54th minute Xgħajra equalised when Xylon Fenech released Kieran Piscopo in the area who then served Miguel Scicluna with a square pass who scored with a low drive past Schembri.

In another action by Birżebbuġa Pace drove sligħtly over the bar from a free kick after Camilleri was fouled outside the area, and on the hour they re-established their slender lead when a free kick by Busuttil created havoc in Xgħajra’s area and in the melee that ensued  Josef Buttigieg, who had entered as a substitute barely two minutes earlier, scored with a hard low drive.

Only two more actions were created up the final whistle and were created by Xgħajra. Jake scicluna dribbled past an opponent on the rigħt flank and he missed the bar by inches from his hard drive and a free kick by the same player created havoc in Birżebbuġa’s area but somehow the ball was cleared away to safety.
