Stripes win Group, Blues in Section B

 Sliema   1

 Birkirkara   2

This game was a decider to determine the Group winner as both teams won two games and attained six points each. A sizeable crowd watched the game at the Mosta Ground. The Stripes were the better outfit during the first period while after the resumption Sliema created many actions in an effort to try and save the day after being two goals down.

The game was only seven minutes old when the Stirpes had alreadty created two actions. After a well-taken flag kick by Kyle Mifsud Sliema keeper Glenn Camilleri did well to fist the ball away and after Neil Micallef  was fouled on the left flank Ayrton Attard floated a perfect ball from the free kick but found no takers to apply the killer touch.

In the 13th minute Birkirkara opened the score. Attard was fouled outside the area and after Brian Mifsud floated a perfect ball in the area from the free kick Gianluca Zammit scored with a low diagonal drive.

This goal seemed to boost the Blues as they mounted three actions. Nelvin Portelli was fouled on the right flankand after the ball was partly cleared from Kurt Shaw’s free kick the ball was cleared to a corner from the rebound shot by Gianni Brincat, Mark Desira then pounced on a loose ball and he missed the upright from outside the area with Stripes keeper Emmanule Galea beaten and Shaw was fouled outside the area and the ball scraped the bar from the same player’s free kick.

In Birkirkara’s next attack just before the break they doubled their lead as Attard entered the area after dribbling past two defenders and netted with a hard low drive.

Three minutes after restart Sliema reduced the gap as Shaw was fouled outside the area and Omar Elouni scored direct from the free kick.

The Blues kept pressing in an effort to saved the day. Zack Mifsud served Miguel Mifsud with a cross in the area and with an open goal at his mercy he drove over the bar, Galea then neutralised the ball from a cross shot by substitute Luke Borg. A cross shot by Miguel Mifsud was cleared to a corner. Elouni was then fouled just outside the area and from the same player’s free kick Galea had to dive and save the ball and was injured in the action but resumed play after attention.

In a Birkirkara attack two minutes before the end they came close to re-establish thier two-goal lead when Aidan Micallef letched on a long through ball and after entering the area Camilleri denied him with a partial diving save and the ball was cleared away to safety.
