A very fast and keenly-contested game, Żabbar built what looked a healthy 2-0 lead in the first period but a strong come-back from Żebbuġ after the resumption they managed to turn the apple cart by scoring three goals. Referee Ryan Caruana had a very hard task to control the game.

Żabbar were the first to threathen as Jake Portelli released Joel Fenech in the area and Żebbuġ keeper Adam Benjellon foiled with a timely sortie. In Żebbuġ’s first action Lee Cuschieri was fouled on the right flank and after the free kick by the same player created havoc in Żabbar’s area the ball was somehow cleared away.

Benjellon was prominent again as he dived at Liam Hartley’s feet and smothered the ball after being put through by Dayton Grech, while at the other end, Attard missed the far post after dribbling past an opponent on the left edge of the area.

In the 25th minute Żabbar opened the score as David Rizzo released Hartley in the area who scored with a hard low drive, and six minutes later they doubled their lead through Owen Borg who scored from inside the area after dribbling past an opponent on the left flank.

Two minutes before the break the same player nearly scored a third goal as he missed the far post from a free kick after Hartley was fouled on the left edge of the area.

In the first action after restart Benjellon saved a free kick shot by Ryan Cardona after Owen Agius was fouled on the right flank and minutes later he neutralised the ball from a cross-shot by the same player.

In the 58th minute both teams were reduced to ten men as the referee showed the red card to Żabbar player Aidan Agius and Żebbuġ player Dale Tabone for hacking at each other.

Żebbuġ reduced the gap on the hour when James Farrugia dribbled past three opponents on the left edge of the area and scored with a diagonal drive as he entered the area, a minute later the ball thumped the bar from a hard drive by Tristan Azzopardi.

The pressing by Żebbug bore fruit as they equalised in the 67th minute as substitute Irwin Agius released Attard in the area and scored with a low hard drive.

Six minutes before the end of normal time Żebbuġ scored a dramatic winner as Attard entered the area after dribbling past an ooponent and scored with a hard diagonal drive.
