Rabat lead standings

Luqa   0

Rabat    2

After this win over bottom-placed Luqa, Rabat top the standings on 13 points from 6 games while Luqa have only one point also from 6 games. Rabat were the better outfit during the game by creating more actions than Luqa and they started on the offensive from the very first whistle.

After only one minute a one-two between Aleandro Brincat and Mark Asciak ended with latter hitting the base of the upright from inside the area with Luqa keeper Hayes Farrugia beaten, who later saved a free kick shot by Christian Farrugia after Brincat was fouled outside the area and after the same player was again fouled the ball was cleared away following the free kick by Asciak.

In Luqa’s first action Matthias Caruana served Ronan Cassar with a through ball in the area  and Rabat keeper Damian Borg saved his shot in two attempts.

The pressure from Rabat resumed until the half time whistle. Brincat released Leone Ellul on the right edge of the area and the ball missed the bar by inches from his hard drive. In another action between the same players Ellul missed the upright from inside the area and Christian Farrugia released Asciak in the area and Luqa defender Eric Plumpton cleared the ball on the line.

A minute after resumption Rabat opened the score as Farrugia served Asciak with a through ball on the right flank, who was in a clear off- side position which was not noticed by Assistant Preston Carbonaro as he was not up with play, and as he entered the area he scored with a hard low drive.

In a Luqa action Nikolai Gatt released Ivor Farrugia in the area but he drove slightly over the bar, while at the other end Brincat served Ellul in the area but he missed the upright.

In the 58th minute Farrugia should have equalised for Luqa but he drove out with only Borg to beat after a perfect through ball by Caruana.

Rabat then won a free kick after Brincat was fouled on the right edge of the area and the ball was cleared away with difficulty from Asciak’s free kick.

In the last minute of normal time Rabat doulbled their lead when substitute Maxim Grech served Asciak with a through ball in the area and as Farrugia came out of his charge to narrow the angle he scored with a lobbed ball.
