Group of 16

Surprise elimination of Mosta

Mosta   0

Birżebbuġa    1

Birżebbuġa who compete in Section B eliminated Mosta who compete in Section A and will now cross swords against Ħamrun in the Quarter Final. Mosta dictated matters for long stretches but failed to failed to turn their superiority into goals while Birżebbuġa tried to operate on the break and also defended grimly.

Mosta started well on the offensive. Luke Formosa dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross. Ishmael Galea was fouled outside the area and Birżebbuġa keeper Jamie Pace saved from the free kick by Jacques Muscat and also neutralised the ball from a cross by Julian Farrugia after being put through on the right flank by Formosa.

Birżebbuġa then created two actions. Jeremy Azzopardi was fouled on the laeft flan and the ball was headed away after the free kick by Jacob Eliada and Carlos Azzopardi was then fouled on the left flank and Zammit saved Jacob Eliada’s free kick.

Mosta regained the initiative, Julian Farrugia served Formosa with a through ball in the area but the ball was blocked from his shot and cleared away and just before the break Mosta came very close to break the deadlock when the ball was cleared on the line after cross-shot from the right flank by Matthew Mifsud.

In the first action after the break Luke Portanier Mifsud released Gianluca Sciberras on the edge of the area and after the ball was blocked by a defender it was cleared away.

In the 41st minute Birżebbuġa scored what proved to be the winner as Jeremy Azzopardi served Omar Eliada with a long throw-in in the area from the right flank who scored with a low drive past Zammit.

In an action by Mosta Mifsud Portanier served Vella with a through pass on the edge of the area and Pace saved his shot, while at the other end, Aidan Spiteri served Omar Eliada with a cross in the area and Zammit denied him with a diving save.

Mosta came very close to level matters in the 48th minute after Vella was fouled outside the area and Pace had to dive and save the free kick shot by Jake Micallef and the pressing by Mosta resumed until the final whistle. After the ball was partly cleared outside the area from a flag kick by Vella, Farrugia drove slightly over the bar from the rebound and Vella then entered the area after dribbling past an opponent and after Pace partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away to safety.
