The 17th MAPFRE/Middlesea EUROMED Regatta 2016 which should have started on Sunday, going on till Wednesday, was expected to be have a record entry but unfortunately this failed to materialize due to consequences resulting from the grisly weather which hit the Maltese Islands over the past days.

Over twenty competitors failed to make it to Malta from Sicily as the Catamaran service from Pozzallo has not operated since  last Friday.

With strong, gusty winds coming from the East, Force 6 to 7, conditions on Sunday, the first day of Euromed, were not right to be able to sail, so no sailing took place.

On early Monday conditions where such that racing could take place although the wind was due to pick up later in the day. Many of the foreign teams needed time to launch coach boats as well as unpack and rig their sailing boats. By noon, all were ready, conditions were favourable and the launch signal was given for all fleets except the Optimist Novices. As the wind was relatively strong, it would be too much for the most junior category of sailors.

The Optimists were able to complete one race just before the winds increased to around 33 knots and it was decided to stop racing for the day. Unfortunately due to shifting winds, the Laser boats were unable to complete one race.

It is projected that tomorrow (Tuesday) the weather forecast should allow a normal planned sailing day with three or more races.

This year’s racing fleet is made up of 216 sailors – 33 Laser, 14 Optimist Novice (sailing for not more than 12 months), 72 Optimist Cadet (8-11 years old), 97 Optimist Senior (12-15 years old).

These hail from 17 countries – Austria, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, the United Kingdom

The 17th MAPFRE/Middlesea EUROMED Regatta 2016 is organised by the Malta Young Sailors Club having  MAPFRE Middlesea p.l.c., as title sponsors.  Other support is being extended by Yachting Malta with the db Seabank Resort + Spa of Mellieha once again recognised as the official hotel of the Regatta.
