Hotsticks   1       Young Stars   2

As the battle for the title hots up every game adopts a do- or- die cup- tie scenario.   The teams locked horns in mid field until mid way in the first half when Hotsticks missed a half chance.   However  in the 20thminute, on winning their first penalty corner, Steve Portelli shot them ahead.   Young Stars reacted strongly and, after Hotsticks’ goalkeeper effected a save diving to his left to parry a shot, in the 27th minute Joseph Dalli  equalized for Young Stars meeting a cross delivered from the right by Charles Micallef.   Half time was reached with the score unchanged at 1 -1

Young Stars took the lead four minutes into the second half when Clive Williams picked up the pieces and scored after Hotsticks custodian had saved a shot from close range.   From then on Young Stars retreated into their shell and defended their lead.    This gave Hotsticks the opportunity to exert pressure which mounted as the game wore on.   They did not take advantage of four penalty corners awarded around the 50th minute mark and they should have equalised on 60 minutes when Shawn Mifsud fluffed an easy chance.   Young Stars hung on to win this hard fought encounter by the odd goal in three heightening expectations of their encounter with Qormi on Sunday.
