World Squash Day at Marsa

More than 800 squash clubs all over the world, and in excess of 40,000 players – representing 72 nations from Argentina to Zimbabwe – took part in the recent World Squash Day 2020 Challenge. Fitness, stamina and skill were put to the test as players competed in individual ties, playing one game up to 20 points with each club score counting towards an overall global result.

The Marsa Squash Section fielded 2 men’s teams, a ladies team, and for the first time in Malta a junior team all playing in a round-robin warm-up event leading up to the main World Squash Day 2020 Challenge.

The 2 men’s teams started against the ladies and juniors and it was soon clear that the commitment from the ladies and juniors was as always 100% with some excellent rallies taking place.

The final matches in the round-robin event saw the juniors edging past the ladies by the narrowest of margins and the 2 men’s teams being ‘unleashed’ against each other. In the end Marsa ‘A’ managed to overcome the challenge of Marsa ‘B’ winning by 11 points. After adding the total scores from all 3 matches this narrow margin wasn’t enough to stop the ‘B’ team from taking the honours. Final scores after 36 matches and 540 minutes of entertaining squash: Marsa ‘B’ 649 / Marsa ‘A’ 638 / Marsa Juniors 622 / Marsa Ladies 540.

Following the round-robin event the players were divided into 2 teams of 12 with 1 team representing TEAM SQUASH and the other team representing TEAM 2020.

The World Squash Day matches were played world wide as the ‘best of 1’ and up to 20 points. At Marsa the final score of 9-3 for TEAM 2020 didn’t really reflect how close some of the matches actually were with the total final score being 205 points for TEAM SQUASH vs 223 points for TEAM 2020

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all with some close and entertaining matches played in the best sprit of the game.
