Winter series drawing to a close: Podium slots yet to be decided

With the RMYC J70 Winter Series is coming to a finale Sunday 15th March, Sebastian Ripard shares a few thoughts on his experience of this Series.

All of the teams are fighting hard for a podium position. Last session, after a blustery winter, the local J70 fleet finally saw some nice light wind conditions. A respite to the Mediterranean’s relentless gales maybe, yet this did not make the racing any easier. All teams were equal for speed putting a lot of pressure on tactics and strategy; small mistakes were all that separated first from last and no team showed true dominance.

Light wind sailing is a different game completely. It is all about keeping the boat powered up which means constant tweaking of sails as crews try and coax every last ounce of pressure from the sails and convert into boat speed. Tacticians scan the race course looking for channels of extra pressure as gentle ripples on the sea surface betray the wind’s secret rhythm. In an age of technology the sailor still relies on black magic to sniff out the wind. Wind is hard to track, it only gives away very subtle visual indications – it is a game of instinct.

This coming Sunday looks like there might be some more breeze, a fitting end for a finale. With the standings at: Team Globe Ground 12pts, Team Middlesea 16pts, Team Gaba 25pts, Team Gasan 26 pts and Team OV 31pts – there are still podium slots to be won or lost.
All five teams are starting to ramp up the tempo as we draw closer to the main event of the J70 local circuit, the Middlesea J70 Med Cup. With a local fleet of 5 teams there are only three spots on the podium and everyone is hungry to prove their mettle. This Sunday should be a good showdown.

The final race of the 2015 Royal Malta Yacht Club Winter Series will be held on Sunday, with first warning signal scheduled for 09:30hrs. Prize Giving will be held at the Royal Malta Yacht Club on Sunday at 14:00hrs.
