Winning start for Dingli, Zejtun, Birzebbuga and Vittoriosa

Zejtun C 3-1 St. Patrick

The Bov First Division kick started with last year’s second division champions Zejtun Corinthians playing against promoted St. Patricks. The Corinthians, this year under the guidance of coach Joe Falzon, easily beaten their neighbours thanks to two goals by veteran striker Kenneth Abela, one in each half. Gers Delia scored the other for the Corinthians as Jurgen Farrugia reduced the gap for the Saints from the penalty spot. On a postive note former Hibernians and Floriana striker Antoine Zahra made his return in football with his hometown Zejtun in the second half.

Dingli 2-1 St.Andrews Luxol

Friday’s second match at the Centenary Stadium saw Dingli Swallows surprise promotion chasers Luxol 2-1 thanks to second half goals by former Hamrun Spartans stars Mauro Brincat and Steve Meilaq. Luxol open the scored thanks to William Camilleri early in the game but the Swallows turned the tie in the second half for the first surprise of the campaign.

Birzebbuga 2-1 Melita

In Saturday’s first encounter Birzebbuga beat Melita 3-2 to register their first victory in first division club history.

Melita, once again under Martin Gregory’s guidance opened the score thanks to former Floriana striker Nicolo Baldachino, but the Southsiders scored three goals in reply, by Matthew Sciortino from the penalty spot, former Hamrun youngster Mead Mifsud and Ronnie Celeste. Melita’s new foreigner Erak reduced the gap in  added time.

Vittoriosa S 4-0 Lija A.

In the second match at the Centenary Stadium, Vittoriosa Stars easily overcame Lija Athletics as the Reds showed no mercy for Marco Gerada’s side. The Stars opened the score through former Hamrun Spartans striker Marcelo Pereira as new comer Tasid Lopes Fereira scored two goals on his debut. Youngster Adam Spiteri scored the fourth to ensure a dream start to Joe Brincat’s era.
