William Chetchuti and Diane Borg named athletes of the year

William Chetcuti and Diane Borg were named as the athletes of the year last Saturday by the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sports. For William Chetcuti this was the tenth time that he was named sportsman of the year, whilst for Diane  this was her third successive award.

William Chetcuti won a very tight contest beating Manty Bugeja by a mere six points. William Chertcuti totalled 233 pointsd against the 227 obtained by Manty Bugeja. Boxer Billy Corito finished in third place obtaining 191 points, waterpolo player Steve Camilleri obtained 176 points and cyclist Etienne Bonello obtained 161 points.

In the female athlete of the year award Diane Borg obtained a total of 261 points, followed triathlon athlete Danica Bonello Spiteri with 212. Third place was obtained by Sue Abela (Ten pin bowling), with 196, followed Colette Sultana (Squash) with 178 points and Lucienne Galea (Karate) 142 points.

The Drag Racing team Mr.Whippy won the team of the year award with a total of 265 points. Second spot was obtained by the rugby national team with a total of 249 points and third place was obtained by the bowling mixed national team with 176 points.

The skeet pairs shooting national team obtained a total of 157 points and the female Squash national team obtained 143 points.

Rugby’s Damien Neil won the official of the year awaqrd with a total of 243 points. Jimmy Bugeja (Shooting) took second spot with 203 points with Weightlifting’s Jesmond Caruana taking third spot with 194 points. Sailing’s Peter Valentino grabbed fourth place with 175 points followed by Envic Galea (Judo) with 174 points.

Shooter Nathan Lee Xuereb won the young athlete award for the John Debattista Trophy with a total of 264 points. Nicole Gatt (Athletics and Weightlifting) came second with 218 points followed by Gianluca Dingli (Karting) with 218 points.

Swimmer Julian Harding obtained 179 points and Judoka Francesco Aufieri obtained 154 points.

Other awards were given to the Mellieha Local council, Malta Hockey Association, Etienne Bonello, San Gorg Preca College, The Rugby National Team, Manty Bugeja, Robbie Ebejer and veterans Frans Spiteri and Alfred Debono.

A special award was given by the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sport to veteran journalist Alfred Camilleri
