The top five defenders in our League

Joshua Cacciattolo takes a look at five top defenders who played in the BOV Premier League last season and are hopeful to make the 2011-12 season a memorable one….

The foundation of every successful team lies in its defence. Last season we saw some rising stars and some fabulous performances by some sterling defenders. Below are my expectations for the top five defenders in my opinion.

Jonathan Caruana (Valletta)

He is the most consistent player in the Valletta squad and last season’s Malta Football Awards best defender. He is brave, clever and every manager’s dream to have in his team. The Maltese international is handful in set pieces, although he only scored few goals,he still is considered as one of the local emerging defenders….  that’s what you expect from a top notch defender. Arguably, the best defender in the Malta (on current form) and this is the reason for Valletta’s best defensive record last term.

Steve Borg (Valletta)

A summer signing for Valletta’s in 2009 from Mosta. He is solid like a rock and almost a must in Jesmond Zerafa’s defence. His partnership with Caruana is the best in the Premier league, helping Citizens to win back the title. The stylish defender is totally committed with the Lilywhites. Long throws are his forte, lacks a bit technicality with the ball but a defender you would not like to tackle a 50-50 try against.

Tyronne Farrugia (Floriana)

The former Under/21 Isnternational centre back is one of the most expensive signing in Floriana’s history. The well built defender has a great aerial ability and composure along with physical strength and technique. Many believe that this centre back Farrugia has hugely contributed to the Floriana’s UEFA Europa league qualification following the Green’s Trophy win. He had a great season, which helped him to establish himself as a top class defender in Premier League. Unfortunately coaches, players and Presidents did not vote for him to be amongst the finalists of the 10th edition of the Malta Football Awards.

Steve Bezzina (Sliema W)

This might be a surprise inclusion, but the Premier League’s promising left back has made into my list. He is one of the most low profile football players in Premier league and is one of the gems in Danilo Doncic’s squad. The young man who is a Valletta product has extended his stay with Sliema with another loan deal. Full of energy and works really hard on the flanks. He is quick, powerful and has a special technique to deliver crosses from the left flank.

Everton Antonio Pereira (Tarxien Rainbows)

The Brazilian stand in Captain for the Rainbows is already a star at the age of 31 for his Club. The Blues owe a lot to their solid centre back. He is equally dangerous in set pieces (scored 8 goals in the last two seasons), and is the obvious backbone of Tarxien Rainbows Football Club in the last two seasons. The Club recently awarded him with a new one year contract to mark his third year in Malta

There are several top class defenders who missed this top five namely Ian Azzopardi, Joseph Zerafa, Carlo Mamo, Roderick Fenech, and many more. Who according to you can make it in our top five defenders list ?

Who are the top 5 defenders in the BOV Premier League ?
