The Malta Mountain Bike Association held its final competition of the season with an atypical Downhill race in Pembroke. The track which was built specifically for the this event started from the starting blocks inside the Malta BMX track, where each rider had to tackle all the ramps and burms of the BMX track and then head out towards a series of man-made ramps all the way down to Pembroke seafront. Apart from technical riding skills the riders needed pedaling stamina to keep their speed up all throughout the course.

Malta’s top Downhill riders did not fear the challenge as most of them practiced on the course in the leading days before the race.

Each rider had to do two runs of the course with the best time taken into consideration. Electronic Timing by ARRTS was used to determine the split seconds difference between the participants.

Robert Magro was the fastest of the day with a time of 2:19:11 followed closely by Damien Camilleri in 2:20:19 and Wayne Zammit in 2:24:25. Gabriella Veneziani braved the course to ride in 3:12:94.

The surprise winner of the day Robert Magro was quite pleased to win his first downhill race, he stated that the determining factor was his riding stamina rather than the technicality of the course.

Wheel Wizard were the sponsors for the event together with the support of H2O and Go&Fun

As the Mountain Bike Association winds down its activities for this year with the annual presentation night on 25th November, plans are already underway for an improved season which will focus on the participation of the cross country team in the Games of Small States of Europe in San Marino.

Recently elected President Mr Pierre Zammit Endrich drew his conclusions after the first season under his tenure. “It has been a year of dedicated work by all the committee members but the final result was quite satisfying. I am very pleased with the level achieved in event organization and the commitment of our members, this encourages us to work harder in 2017.” concluded Zammit Endrich.  One may find further information on the Malta Mountain Bike Association by visiting their Facebook page or the website:www.maltamountainbike.org.mt
