The Maltese National Weightlifting Team has just returned from the Swiss town of Tramelan, Bern, were it participated in the largest competition in the sport the country has ever seen. The competition, named Challenge 210 took place on 26th October. A total of 131 athletes from six different countries participated, including France, Germany, Monaco, Italy, Malta and host nation Switzerland. The Maltese team was composed of three lifters, including new comers Ryan Agius and Martin Pisani, with Jovan Reljic as the more experienced of the three. They were under the watchful eye of coach Charles Degorgio and managed by Malta Weightlifting Association officer Jesmond Vassalo. All three athletes secured a stellar performance amidst strong competition pressure – with personal bests all round. Martin Pisani secured a 94kg Snatch and a 110kg Clean and Jerk, while Ryan Agius secured a 80kg Snatch following up with a 100kg Clean and Jerk. Last to take the podium was Jovan Reljic, who after a somewhat shaky start with his first attempt, came back to Snatch a 100kg and Clean and Jerk 120kg, narrowly missing his final attempt at 125kg. With that, the final overall rankings, out of 131 athletes had Reljic at 20th place, Ryan Agius at 50th and Martin Pisani at 60th place. It is worthwhile mentioning that for Agius and Pisani, this was their first experience representing Malta at international competition. The Malta Weightlifting Association holds high hopes for these athletes as they continue to pursue personal bests.

The competition was possible with the aid of the Malta Olympic Committee and the Federation of Switzerland.

 

During this period, the recent merger-president of Jesmond Caruana was at Wroclaw, Poland with the prestigious role of acting as an international referee at the World Weightlifting Championships, even acting as head referee in the final category which was won by Super Heavy weights Albegov of Russia followed by Moulaei of Iran.

 

Team Nazzjonali Malti tal-weightlifting għadu kemm ippartecipa f’kompetizzjoni  prestiġjuża  tal-Weightlifting li saret fi-Tramelan ġewwa li- Svizzera. Din il- kompetizzjoni saret fis-26 ta’Ottubru ‘Challange 210’ hi l-akbar kompetizzjoni tal-Weightlifting li tiġi organizzata fi-Svizzera.

Għal din il- kompetizzjoni pparteċipaw 131 Atleta minn sitt pajjiżi –Franza, Germania, Svizzera, Italia Malta u Monaco

It- Team Malti kien kompost min 3 atleti Jovan Reljic, Ryan Agius u Martin Pisani. Dawn kienu taħt il-gwida tal-kowc  Charles Degiorgio u mmexxija mill-ufficjal tal- Malta Weightlifting Association Jesmond Vassallo.

Il-prestazzjoni tat-team Malti kienet waħda eċċellenti tant li- Jovan Reljic, Ryan Agius u Martin Pisani kisru record personali tagħhom kemm Snatch kif ukol fil- Clean & Jerk

Fl- overall ranking tac- ‘Challange 210’  minn 131 Atleta  Jovan Reljic ġie l- 20 post, Ryan Agius fil- 50 post u Martin Pisani fis-60 post. Għal Ryan Agius u Martin Pisani din kienet l-ewwel esperjenza li rrappreżentaw lil Malta barra l-pajjiż. Il-Malta Weightlifting Association tawgura lil- dawn l-Atleti għas-success personali li kisbu.

Il-kompetizzjoni kienet possibli bil-ghajnuna tal Kumitat Olimpiku Malti u il-Federazjoni tal-Isvizzera.

Tul dan il-gimgha li ghadied  il-president tal-ghaqda Jesmond Caruana kien gewwa Wroclaw il-Polonja bhala referee internazzjonali fil-Kampjonat dinji tal-weightlifting huwa kien ukoll il- head referee fil-finali tal-kategorija Super Heavy weights li intrebhet minn Albegov tar-Russja segwit minn Moulaei ta Iran.
