The Malta National waterpolo team coached by Sergio Afric lost 15-3 in Turkey in a European qualification match. This defeat which was expected on paper, comes only few weeks after Malta’s home win against Poland were our National team won in front of the home crowd at the National Pool in Tal Qroqq.

In the first session Malta went 1-0 up but finished to lose the first 8mins 2-1. Some two on one situations not well executed by the Maltese players led to goals scored one after the other by our opponents. Malta’s scorers were Niki Lanzon, Michele Stellini and Sean Gravina.

Speaking from Turkey, Malta’s assistant coach Karl Izzo said in a comment with www.sportinmalta.com that we still lack motivation up front when we come to attack. “We really miss the professional capabilities of a player like Stevie Camilleri in such games, nonetheless Sergio Afric and myself take out the positives  from this game and look forward for our next internationals” commented Izzo.

When asked about the game itself Izzo said that the Hungarian referee whistled some harsh decisions against our team and that the score could have easily been closer if we did not conceed three easy goals in the dying moments of session four.

Our group comprises only Malta, Turkey and Poland. Malta plays home to Turkey in July 2011.

Turkey v Malta will be broadcast on Malta Stars channel 614 this Wednesday.
