Champions Neptunes Emirates have started strengthening their squad in view of the forthcoming season with the acquisition of Clint Mercieca. He signed a 4 year contract with the Balluta side.
Mercieca featured for a number of years in the Sirens squad that won all honours and earlier in his career featured for Marsascala. The 29-year old is known for his powerful shooting and sharpness in front of goal and was one of Sirens’ top players.
San Giljan also strengthened their squad with a double acquisition, as veteran Matthew Pisani joined them from champions Neptunes after his contract had expired last September. The thirty five year old signed a two year contract.
Youngster Ryan Mock also joined Karl Izzo’s squad from Sirens. The twenty two year old returned to the Balluta side after playing for three years with the St Paul’s Bay squad. He signed a four year contract.
Malta national waterpolo player Andrea Bianchi signed a four year contract extension with San Giljan. His contract was due to expire and he also had an offer from Neptunes, but in the end he stayed put. San Giljan are also interested in Sirens talisman David Cutajar.
Youngster Ranier Scerri and veteran Anthony Galea joined second division champions Marsascala on a one year loan from San Giljan. Marsascala coach Pierre Borg is also monitoring veteran Charlie Zammit’s situation, who’s expected to leave Sirens.
Last season’s runners up Sliema are interested in signing Matthew Zammit known as “Ix-Xellugi” for the summer league on a two year loan deal. The twenty four year is in Hungary to prepare for his return to the local waterpolo in June following a two-year doping ban.
Current Sliema coach Sergio Afric is set to sign a new goalkeeper, most probably a foreigner, as last season’s goalkeeper Ryan Coleiro has an issue with the Croat. Romanian Bogdan Rath will not be retained by Sliema as he is expected to wind down his succesful waterpolo career.
Exiles signed Peter Borg from Sirens and will see their former player, Frenchman Aurelein Cousin, coaching the team after the club parted ways with Joe Caruana Dingli, the latter may be joining Sirens as coach.
