Waterpolo: Germany are Malta’s next EC qualifiers opponents

Wednesday, August 10, 2011, 20:00

The Malta National Waterpolo team has been paired to play against Germany in the European Championships 2012 second round Qualification matches.

Although we have avoided the likes of super powerful teams like Spain, Russia and Greece, Germany may still be considered as one of the strongest National teams still in contention for the five places to go and play the Championships in Eindhoven in 2012.

The draw for the decisive second-round qualification matches for the European Championships 2012 in Eindhoven,  was held today at the LEN Bureau in Luxembourg. The matches are to be contested on the 1st and 15th October on a home and away basis; only the winner of each duel will advance to the 2012 European Championships.

Today´s draws will be a big shock for some nations as only the winner of each duel will advance to the 2012 European Championships. Furthermore, the upcoming continental championships in Eindhoven are the one and only chance for the remaining European teams to qualify for the FINA Olympic Games Qualification Tournament, and there not many other chances to qualify for the 2013 FINA World Championships either. Up to now, Serbia, Italy, Croatia, Hungary and home team Great Britain are qualified for the London Games on the European side so far.
Changes in European men´s waterpolo and the qualification formula have now caused some unusual and even shocking draws. So Russia, three-time European champion in the 1980s, is facing not only a tough match against Spain, but also the threat of missing the European Championships for the first time since their debut 1954. France will be pretty unhappy as well. Ten years after the last appearance at European Championships had beaten Russia in the first-round matches, will face the experienced team of Macedonia in the second-round clashes. Slovakian hopes for a top 12 comeback after two years of absence were facing a serious blow as well as the 2000 Olympic Games participant is facing Greece now.
