Marco Risso giving instructions to his San Giljan players

According to unconfirmed reports, sportinmalta.com can reveal that the new national water polo team coach shall be Marco Risso who takes over from Sergio Afric after just over 2 years at the helm.

Risso is currently in Malta, coaching San Giljan, but for the past year he was in charge of Italian Serie A side Rari Nantes Sori. He will probably be joined on the national team’s bench by Karl Izzo, who was his assistant last year at San Giljan and is now coaching Sirens, or Pierre Borg who is assisting him this year with the Balluta side.

Update 8/7/2010

Sportinmalta.com has contacted Sergio Afric for his comments and he confirmed that his contract with the ASA has expired on the 30th June 2010. He went on to say that during his stint as national team coach, Malta has moved up 10 places in the rankings and from competing in the Group B European Championships, they made the grade to compete for the qualification into Group A European Championships.

Sportinmalta.com also has information that Marco Risso has put himself forward to occupy the national team hot seat. It now seems that the situation is entirely in the ASA’s hands, with the latter having to choose between renewing Afric’s contract or else giving the job to Risso.

It appears that Afric was on a one-year contract and this has expired. Rightly so, I think, the ASA did not renew it. May I ask, what was the contribution of his assistant Peter Decesare during this one year?

I think that the reason is clear … I mean after calling all the Sliema players to train with the national team…heqq!!

are you serious? Afric is a very good coach but he has worn too many hats in local waterpolo and new faces are needed
