Dr Tabone praised the athletes for their efforts and told them they were an example to the whole nation.

He said that it is a very honourable gesture from the players and all the volunteers involved to give their energy in aid of the Dar tal-Providenza, which needs €13,000 a day.

He appealed to the Maltese and Gozitans to honour this sacrifice and complement the efforts by donating to this ‘daily miracle’.

In his welcome speech, Fr Martin Micallef, Director of the Dar tal-Providenza thanked the Acting President for gladly accepting to start off the marathon.

He touched on the four main reasons behind the Volleyball Marathon. Naturally, collecting money towards the running of the Home at a time when donations were seasonally low was one of them.

However, he believed the three other reasons were just as important: using the marathon to encourage voluntary work (well over 300 people from all walks of life and age groups volunteered their time); using the marathon to encourage sports – in this case Volleyball – for a healthy lifestyle and using the marathon to emphasise, if there ever was a need, that society has to be respectful towards persons with disability, to treat them with the dignity they deserve and to make available to them choices and opportunities that every citizen has a right to enjoy.

The opening session of the marathon was also visited by Archbishop Mgr. Paul Cremona, who said that the marathon is in itself a living experience of two aspects of Jesus’ life, the life of Jesus when he was doing good and doing charity, and the life of Jesus who suffered. He also appealed the Maltese to help this noble cause.

Bank of Valletta’s CEO, Mr Tonio Depasquale, said that Bank of Valletta’s support to Dar tal-Providenza is an acknowledgment of the importance that id-Dar Tal-Providenza has in our our society.

He said that the local industry is increasingly aware of its responsibility towards society and encouraged the public to show their appreciation towards the efforts undertaken by all players, volunteers and organizers by donating generously.

The first ball of the match was served by resident Frankie Bonello.

This is the third year that the marathon is being held at Dar tal-Providenza.
