International volleyball referee Mr. Nello Calleja has been appointed by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) to be a member of the group of referees for the Men’s European League Round Pool A, which will be played in Varna, Bulgaria, during the forthcoming weekend.

Hosts Bulgaria will be fighting it out with Denmark, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in a round robin competition with the aim to qualify for the Final Round which will be played later on this summer.  Another tournament between the same teams will be played in Skopje the weekend after to decide the two teams qualifying for the Final Round.

The European League is a competition organised by the CEV every summer for European men’s and women’s national teams.  This year, eight teams will participate in the Men’s category, whilst twelve will take part in the Women’s section.  Slovenia are the current title holders in the Men’s European League but will not be participating in this year’s event, whilst Hungary will be defending the Women’s crown won last year in Turkey.

The eventual winners of the 2016 European League will be offered the possibility to take part in the 2017 edition of the World League organised by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB.)
