FC President Victor Sciriha has his eyes set on more European football in the near future for Malta’s capital city.

Speaking ahead of Valletta’s Europa League second round qualifying game against Dutch side FC Utrecht last week, club president Sciriha outlined his intent to bring European football to Malta.

Valletta went on to lose the match 3-1 against a thoroughly professional and effective Utrecht team, which rules out partaking in continental football for this season. However, next season is a very realistic target.

Sciriha said: “I think that the club has taken a direction that the club would further progress in the UEFA competitions.

“We’re almost a fully professional side, but we still have got a lot of things to do to be real professionals, we have some players who also that play for the national team who are not yet full time professionals,” Sciriha continued.

Coming up against a side of full professionals in Utrecht, the gulf in class was clear to see. Despite Valletta pulling a goal back late on, the Eredivisie side were good for their win and it could be argued deserved a greater margin of victory.

The club are currently waiting on permits to improve the training and ground’s facilities and Sciriha believes those improvements to be key.

“I believe that once we will have all our facilities that Valletta can progress in Europe. In fact, we’re one of the clubs that manage to sell a good percentage of players to the clubs abroad.

“We’ve been quite successful but I believe we can go much further than we’ve achieved since the last 10 years,” he explained.

The club president had a final parting word for the fans of his club: “I would call them passionate, they love the club you know.”

Valletta’s preseason is well underway and the season kicks off on August 17th as they face Mosta at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium.
