Yesterday evening, Maltese champions Valletta made an important step to progress to the next round of the UEFA Champions League when they swept past San Marino’s Tre Fiori to the tune of 3-0 in the Serravalle stadium.

Alfred Effiong was making his first appearance for the Citizens and marked this occasion with an early goal in the second half. Valletta were always in control of the game, inspired by their Brazilian playmaker Denni Dos Santos.

Ryan Fenech started testing the Tre Fiori goal early in the game with a fine freekick that was saved in the 8th, and Effiong was denied a goal four minutes later when Bertozzi parried his shot.

Although Tre Fiori had a chance at goal later in the second half, it was Effiong who once again was close to opening the score but was once again denied by Bertozzi. The Nigerian was pivotal in City’s first goal as he raced through the Tre Fiori defence, sending a pass to to Denni who found little difficulty to make 1-0 for Valletta in the 43rd minute.

After the change of ends, Effiong was once again in the centre of the action when in the 50th minute he slid past the defence to meet a Denni pass to make 2-0.

Gilbert Agius came in for Fenech in the 55th minute and Barbosa missed the third Valletta goal when he failed to hit the target with only the goalkeeper to beat. Agius was pushed in the box in the 68th minute, and from the resultant penalty, City’s captain put the game beyond reach.

In the return leg, Valletta need to maintain this healthy advantage to be able to progress to the second round where they will meet Lithuanian side Ekranas.
