Maltese Premier league leaders Valletta silenced their critics as they won against Sliema Wanderers 2-0 in today’s second match. The Citizens took advantage of Hibernians’ early slip up to gain again the sole leadership in the Premier League standings. Valletta now have 35 points from 25 games. Latvian striker Aleksanders Cekulajevs got the first goal for the Citizens and an injury time William Barbosa powerful shot sealed the game for Valletta.

On the stroke of half time, Wiliam Barbosa missed a golden chance to open the score as his penalty was saved by Henry Bonello.

Valletta mentor Jesmond Zerafa was without Edmund Agius, Roderick Briffa, Michael Mifsud and Alfred Effiong, as captain Gilbert Agius returned to the first eleven.

Sliema Wanderers coach Danilo Doncic was without striket Daniel Mitev and captain Mark Scerri as he was sent off in last week 3-3 draw against Balzan Youths.

First Half

30min: Valletta were close to taking the lead but Sliema goalkeeper Henry Bonello blocked Terence Scerri’s volley shot.

45min: Penalty for Valletta as Galabov fouls inside the box!!! Henry Bonello saves William Barbosa’s shot. The Maltese international saved the second penaly against Valletta this season.

Second Half

65min: Valletta took the lead. Aleksander Cekulajevs scored in empty net after a Nicola Bogdanovic blunder. Cekulajevs potted in a lose ball after Bonello’ssave on Dos Santos close shot.

90min: William Barbosa sealed the win for Valletta as his powerful shot gave no chance to Henry Bonello.
