This weekend saw the Valletta Subbuteo Club continuing with their commitment abroad by competing in the Major of Mons.  The team event took place on Saturday where the citizens were competing against 45 other teams from all over Europe.

In the group stage Valletta beat the world’s number 1 team TFC Mattersburg of Austria 3 – 1 and SC Flanders of Belgium 3 – 0.  In the next round they were paired up against ASD Master San Remo of Italy who they beat 3 – 0 to make it to the quarter final against SC Fiamme Azzurre CM of Italy which they also won.  In the semi final, they faced a very tough challenge but their opponents, SC Charleroi of Belgium, were too good on the day for our boys which they lost with a close score of 2 – 1.

On Sunday it was time for the Open competition were all of our players took part.  In the first round all our players advanced to the Round of 32 with the exception of Vince Mifsud who was knocked out in the barrage.  In the round of 32 most of our players faced a tough and challenging time were Mario Camilleri played against world number 1 Carlos Flores which saw the Valletta player lose the match 4 – 0.  On the other hand, Derek Conti, Samuel Bartolo and Chris Thomas all registered a win and moved on to the next round.  In the last sixteen, Derek Conti and Samuel Bartolo played each other with the Valletta captain being victorious with a score of 1 – 0 while Chris Thomas beat Belgium’s Justin Leroy 4 – 3.  In the Quarter final Derek Conti faced Portugal’s Sergio Louriero were till full time they were draw at 4 goals a piece.  The game went to sudden death where the Portuguese player scored and knocked out the Valletta captain 5 – 4.  Chris Thomas on the other hand had a difficult time in containing Austria’s Wolfgang Leitner were at full time the score read 3 – 0.

The citizen’s adventure end’s here but they definitely could walk away with their heads held up high.  The team made it to the semis from 46 teams and two of our boys made it to the quarter finals out of 106 players.  They can now only look forward to their next tournament were they will definitely, as they did this weekend, make us proud once again.
