Valletta out of UEFA Europa League with head held high

Gilbert AgiusValletta’s 0-0 draw against Ruch Chorzów in Poland was unfortunately not enough to see them through to the next round of the UEFA Europa League. Given the 1-1 result in Malta a week before, the Citizens needed a win or at least a 2-2 draw to win the tie and meet Austria Vienna in the next stage of this prestigious competition.

The first half of the game saw Ruch Chorzów creating most of the chances, but a well organised Valletta side saw them efficiently protecting Hogg’s goal. At the change of ends, Valletta plucked up more courage and Dyson Falzon’s inclusion in the 64th minute started reaping its dividends but Valletta still couldn’t find the goal that could save the game. Their best chance came in the 94th minute when captain Gilbert Agius directed his shot at goal, but his effort was cleared by goalkeeper Matko Perdijić inches from the goal line.

Yesterday’s result also brought an end to the European experience of all Maltese clubs involved (Birkirkara, Valletta and Sliema) and one must add that this was an overall positive experience seeing that our teams managed 3 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses.
