Local volleyball champions, Valletta Mapei, who last year won all honours in the men’s category, have this year embarked on yet another ambitious quest to keep building on last year’s successes.

A few days ago, the Valletta outfit won the Super Cup final with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Defenders Aloysians, while earlier in the month the club also won the Pre-Season Tournament. The main objective remains the retention of the Men’s 1st Division league title which this year will be a harder task seeing that the amount of teams vying for this trophy has increased to seven.

Following a busy end to last season, with most of Valletta’s players being selected as part of the national team to take part in the European Group C Indoor Volleyball Championships and the CEV European Continental Beach Volleyball Cup, the team started preparing for the season with a month of physical training between August and September. While the league’s preliminary round is still in it’s early stages, the Valletta team is undergoing regular training sessions and also playing friendly matches so that all players are in the best form as the league campaign progresses and get tougher. The players who were part of last year’s campaign have been confirmed with a couple of new faces being added to strengthen the squad.

In the mean time the committee members are working hard to conclude the arrangements for a repeat of last year’s highly successful training camp that was held in Milan with the help of a number of sponsors and Italian volleyball clubs in the region. Last year’s training camp saw the team playing three games while in Milan, being invited to watch a Serie A volleyball game and also assisting to a training session of one of these top flight Serie A teams.

Once again, Valletta Volleyball Club are being supported by the Valletta local council for their work in the junior sectors with the setting up of a volleyball summer school. “It is our pleasure to collaborate for the third year running with this volleyball club as they have not only achieved excellent results and kept the flag of our capital city flying high, but have shown great determination to push the game forward and also start off the junior section for future generations” Valletta mayor Dr. Alexiei Dingli said.
