A number of matches were played over the weekend from the National Volleyball league. On Saturday, in the men’s league, Valletta Mapei met Sliema in a high tension match which gave international referee Marvic Micallef a hard time in controlling players from both teams. Valletta started off well with powerful spikes from captain Jonathan Chetcuti. Sliema fought back with veteran David Caruana in good form. Paul Vella and libero Antoine Cortis gave their utmost too. However, unfortunately for Sliema, more was expected from their foreign player as numerous unforced errors were committed. It was Valletta that won each of the sets with Paul Tonna, Dalton Caruana and Robert Balzan having the opportunity to attack with good sets from Owen Spiteri. Valletta brushed off the Sliema challenge and closed the game with a clean 3-0 score.

Flyers TimeOutIn the women’s first division league, the main event was definitely the match between Paola Hibs Candy and Flyers Depiro. In a match that lasted over an hour and a half, both teams were in their best form and offered good volleyball to all supporters present. If the result went Flyers Depiro’s way, these would be at the top of the league table with an advantage of four points over their closest rivals, Fleur de Lys. Both teams started off on a good note with neither team allowing the opponent to gain easy points. Paola were in fine attacking form with Carmen Gauci, Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb making the most of sets from the experienced Tiziana Bonnici. On the other hand, Flyers excelled in defence with libero Lindsay Cordina and Dorianne Bonnici effecting precious recoveries. Dorianne Grech also did very well at the net with effective blocks. It was a nail biting game as both teams won point after point. The experience of the Paolites paid off towards the end of each set as these were always able to go the extra mile and win the match 3-0.

In another ladies game, Fleur de Lys beat Playvolley Galaxy 3-1. Michael Magro’s team did well during the first two sets giving Playvolley no opportunities at all. Set scores were highly in favour of Fleur de Lys. However in the third set, Playvolley put up a fight and even managed to win this set 25-22. This filled Luca Randazzo’s girls with enthusiasm and Fleur de Lys faced an uphill struggle. Michael Magro restored order to his team by playing his usual rotation in the fourth set with Belinda Milton winning points with each opportunity and this paid off as Fleur de Lys won the match 3-1.
