In the first weekend game from the Men’s Preliminary Round, the young and inexperienced Mgarr posed little resistance to Valletta San Antonio as the latter won 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-10). The divide between both teams was evident, particularly the Champions’ consistency throughout the game, even though Valletta had various key players missing for this fixture. Robert Balzan and Paul Tonna led the Valletta attack even though the Citizens committed a number of unforced errors while serving. They now face leaders Aloysians Defenders this weekend, as both teams have a clean sheet, in what promises to be an exciting encounter at the top of the table.

In another match from the Men’s Preliminary Round on Sunday, Sliema finally managed a win against newcomers Iklin. The first set went Iklin’s way with a 25-17 scoreline, but it was Sliema who levelled matters in a highly balanced 25-23 second set. The Blues managed to impose their game in the final two sets (25-18, 25-20) to win their first three points of the season.

Title contenders Depiro Flyers swept aside the challenge from the Play Volley Galaxy youngsters in their Ladies 1st Division game on Saturday, winning with a convincing 3-0 score (25-15, 25-16, 25-10). Playvolley threw in the towel in the latter part of the game after managing to pose a challenge to their more quoted opponents in the beginning of the game, particularly in the first set.

Also in the Ladies 1st Division, Paola Hibs Candy kept their course towards their eight successive title by beating Fleur de Lys on Sunday. It was Fleur de Lys though who jumped to a 1-0 lead by stunning their opponents with a 26-24 score in the first set. But Hibs shattered their dreams, as Mark Hili’s team imposed their game through their fierce attacking and serving to win the remaining three sets 25-18, 25-9 and 25-17 and march to a 3-1 victory.

There wasn’t much of a contest in the Ladies’ 2nd Division, as Flyers Depiro II had the better of TGIF in a straight set win. Flyers gave ample space to their fringe players to gain experience with the final score being that of 3-0 (25-15,  25-5, 25-19). Leaders Southend 2 had to work a bit harder to win against the under 18 Paola Hibs side with a straight set victory (25-16, 25-18, 25-19)

In the mini-volley category, the following results were registered:
Flyers -Flyers II (2-0); Playvolley-Southend Red (0-2); Southend Pink -Fleur de Lys (0-2) Flyers II- Paola (0-2).
