Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 23:55

Valletta are the winners of the Maltese Super Cup. Michael Mifsud was Valletta’s hero as the nippy striker hit an excellent hat-trick to break down the resolute Floriana. The thirty year old hit his treble for the Citizens as his last goals against Floriana was another hat trick a year and a half ago in the 3-1 100 Anniversary Cup win.

The Lilywhites were by far the best side, coach Jesmond Zerafa opted for a lone striker (Michael Mifsud) supported by William Barbosa and Brazilian Denni Dos Santos, who just lasted 23 minutes after he picked up a knock and was substituted by Alfred Effiong.

Floriana coach Michael Woods started with a defensive 4-2-3-1 formation as veteran Ivan Woods was given the nod upfront. Goalkeeper Manuel Bartolo and winger John Mintoff were handed their debuts.

First Half

1min: Striker Michael Mifsud’s effort was denied by the woodwork

5min: Manuel Bartolo was called early in the game as he saved a William Barbosa close shot.

33min: Christian Caruana’s effort was saved by Valletta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

41min: Floriana reaction was immediate as Tyronne Farrugia’s header was cleared off the line by Andre Hogg.

45 min: Before the end of the first half, Ivan Woods free kicks were both off target as the Citizens entered the dressing room 1-0 up.

Second Half

64min: Ivan Woods’ free kick was saved by Maltese international goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

67min: Michael Mifsud was brought down by Argentinean defender Pablo Doffo. It looked like a harsh decision.

Simply too strong for Floriana to manage. With similar performances Valletta have no contest and will repeat last year’s outstanding record.
