Borg & Effiong help Valletta overcome Hamrun

Valletta moved two points clear at the top of table after they beat Hamrun 2-0 in Friday’s second match at the National Stadium. The leaders stretched the unbeaten record to 35 games fromlast season.

Steve Borg scored an early first half goal as Alfred Effiong scored in the second half for a comfortable victory.

The Citizens should have won by a greater margin but Hamrun’s goalkeeper, Omar Borg, made a number of crucial saves. Valletta also hit the post.

Valletta coach fielded an offensive 4-3-3 formation as Brazilians Denni Dos Santos, William Barbosa supported centre striker Alfred Effiong. The “Invincibles” opened their league defence with a 4-2 victory against Tarxien Rainbows last week.

Hamrun Spartans’ mentor Jesmond Zammit opted for an initial 4-5-1 formation as former Valletta winger Kevin Sammurt and Geatan Spiteri supported lone striker Anderson Mendes Ribiero. Swiss midfielder Carlo Polli and Luis Fernando Silva made their debut for the Spartans. Hamrun also started with a 3-1 win against Balzan Youths last week.

First Half

16min: Goal 1-0. Steve Borg opes the score with a perfect header.

25min: Omar Borg kept Hamrun in the game as he saved a powerful Denni Dos Santos low shot.

44min: Valletta’s Denni Dos Santos missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 as he shot low wide.

Second Half

61min: Andrew Hogg saved a Massimo Grima low free kick.

68min:  Goal 2-0. Alfred Effiong sealed the issue after Ryan Fenech lobbed the ball over Omar Borg and the former Marsaxlokk striker tapped in an empty net for his third goal of the season.

78min: Alfred Effiong hit the post as he had the chance to serve Falzon to miss the chance for the third goal for the Whites
