Stephen Azzopardi has just been appointed Floriana’s coach this site can confirm.

“I can officially confirm that I will be taking over as coach with Floriana, I will be present tonight for the team’s session at 7pm at Sta Lucia and will take over formally as from tomorrow’s session” These were the first words Azzopardi said when contacted by this site this evening.

Azzopardi got the go ahead from Qormi via a telephone call this evening after a meeting held earlier today at noon was inconclusive (see story below)

Joe Brincat will be handling the Qormi team at least for the time being. Redino Apap could not confirm or otherwise if a new coach will be appointed to work along with Brincat. Rumours say that if Qormi win against Melita this weekend Brincat will be officially appointed coach till the end of the season.

Qormi coach Stephen Azzopardi has been called for a meeting at noon today with Qormi FC committee representatives.

Azzopardi is currently in the middle of a controversy after he has been approached by Floriana and has been offered a contract to lead the team till the end off the season. Sources close to Floriana have confirmed that Justin Attard and his colleagues have called Redino Apap the Qormi President whereby they have asked permission from Qormi to speak with Azzopardi. Qormi gave the green light for Floriana to speak with the coach but no agreement has been reached as yet.

Contacted by this site Azzopardi said “I confirm that I have been in contact with Floriana FC and I am in an awkward situation where I know that Qormi have given permission to Floriana to speak to me but have no idea what my future will be”

Our sources at Floriana said that Mark Wright has agreed that the Club seeks a new coach after his lack of availability. The Greens first option was John Buttigieg but the two parts did not come close to shake hands.

Qormi summoned Stephen Azzopardi today at noon in a meeting led by Redino Apap. The Qormi President explained the situation to Azzopardi whereby Qormi explained they still want to keep their coach till the end of the season but at the same time they stated they will not stop him if the coach wants to move elsewhere.

Qormi have recently recruited Joe Brincat as Assistant coach and he will be the automatic substitute if Azzopardi turns green.

Asked if he will conduct Qormi’s session this evening, Azzopardi said “I honestly do not have an idea what will happen, the meeting was inconclusive and I will leave the two Clubs negotiate between them. I always believe that I need to finsish a project that I start but at the momet I do not exclude anything” he concluded.
