Under 15: Mellieha win seven-goal thriller. Zebbug turn defeat into victory

Mellieha 4 – Attard 3

This action-packed game produced seven goals and surely pleased the sizeable crowd present at the Luxol Ground. After a balanced first period Mellieha were the better side after the restart as they created much more occasions than Attard.

Attard were the first to threaten as they created three actions in a row. Paul Toledo
served Gianluca Simiana with a cross from the right and Mellieha keeper Joseph Caruana saved his close-range shot in two attempts. Robert Muscat served Toledo with a through ball but Jamie Vella foiled him with a timely intervention and Simiana, after beating three defenders crossed the ball from the left flank which was cleared with difficulty.

In a Mellieha reaction they mounted two actions. Ryan Cutajar served Jack Vella in the area but Attard keeper Igor Schembri foiled him with a timely sortie and Jack Vella served Julian Agius in the area and Schembri saved his effort in two attempts.

Mellieha opened the score in the 11th minute when Jack Vella served Agius in the area and he scored with a low shot, and two minutes later Attard came very close to restore equilibrium when Simiana was fouled on the right flank, the ball was cleared to a corner from the free kick by Jesmar Kitcher, from the flag kick Liam Mangion served Jean Borg with a short pass in the area and the ball was cleared on the line from his shot.

The last two actions before the break were created by Mellieha. Jack Vella was fouled outside the area and the ball was cleared to a corner from the free kick shot by Ryan Cutajar and Jonathan Cutajar served served Agius on the right flank, the ball was partly cleared from his cross and Jack Vella missed the upright from the rebound shot.

In the first action after restart Mangion was fouled outside the area and Agius missed Mellieha’s bar by inches from the free kick, at the other end, Agius served substitute Luke Camilleri with a perfect cross but he miscued his shot from a very ideal position and a good chance was lost.

Attard equalised in the 43rd minute when Jacob Farrugia was fouled outside the area and Jonathan Cutajar scored a beauty with a rising shot from the free kick, and two minutes later they scored a second goal as substitute Jan Magro dribbled past a defender and scored with a hard grounder from outside the area.

In a quick reaction Mellieha mounted two actions in a row. Ryan Cutajar served Agius on the right flank and the ball was cleared with difficulty following his cross and Christian Borg served Rayan Cutajar in the area and after dribbling past an opponent the ball was cleared
on the line from his shot.

The score became 2-2 as Mellieha equalised in the 60th minute as Jacob Farrugia dribbled past a defender and served Ryan Cutajar in the area who netted with a hard grounder.

In the 67th minute the score became 3-2 for Mellieha when Jack Vella served Ryan Cutajar in the area and as Attard keeper came out of his charge he tripped Cutajar and the same player converted from the penalty spot, and two minutes later the score became 4-2 when Agius served Jack Vella in the area and he scored with a low shot.

In the third minute of added time Attard reduced the gap as they won a corner kick on the right flank and from the flag kick by Kurt Agius, Jean Borg headed the ball in past Mellieha keeper Joseph Caruana.

Sirens 1 – Zebbug R 3

Zebbug managed to turn defeat into victory after being one goal down. They played the off-side game to perfection and the Sirens forwards were caught 10 times in the trap. The north sea-siders were very slow in their approaches and Zebbug were the much faster outfit.

The first action was created by Zebbug as Philip Camilleri served Christian Farrugia with a through ball and Sirens keeper Triston Attard denied him with a diving save as he tried his luck from outside the area, at the other end, Dejan Azzopardi served Ramsay Ashibane with a through ball who returned the compliment to Ryan Mizzi on the right flank and after his cross Zebbug keeper Cayton Pace neutralised the ball.

Zebbug then mouted three actions in a row. Christian Farrugia served Matthew Attard with a cross from the right flank and Attard saved his close-range shot. Attard served Neil Grech with a long throw-in on the right flank who after advancing crossed the ball in the area which was neutralised by the Sirens keeper and he did likewise from a cross by Joseph Sciortino after after he was served with a through ball by Brandon Calleja.

In the 30th minute Sirens opened the score when Dejan Azzopardi served Ashibane with a through ball and he scored with a rising shot from outside the area.

In the 33rd minute Zebbug came very close to restore equilibrium when the ball was cleared on the line from a shot by Sciortino after a Christian Farrugia through ball, but a minute later they equalised in a very unusual way. Sirens keeper Triston Attard kicked the ball from a goal kick and as the ball hit the head of Sciortino it finished at the back of the net.

Zebbug were the better outfit after the restart by creating much more action than Sirens. Sciortino served Neil Grech in the area and Attard truned the ball to a corner which was taken by Philip Camilleri and the ball was cleared to another corner. Wayne Camilleri then served Attard in the area and the ball was turned to a corner by the sirens keeper. After Sciortino was fouled outside the area Attard saved the free kick shot by Calleja.

In the 59th minute Zebbug scored a second goal when Attard served Philip Grech with a cross in the area from the right flank and he scored with a low shot.

In a Sirens reaction they mounted two actions in a row. Substitute Matthias Demicoli seved Ashibane with a through ball but Daniel Farrugia foiled him with a timely tackle and after a free kick shot by Jamie Gatt hit the defensive barrier the same player missed the upright from the rebound shot.

Four minutes before the end Zebbug put the issue beyond doubt as they scored a third goal when Neil Grixti served Philip Grech in the area and he scored with a low shot.

In the last action just before the end Sirens forward Dejan Azzopardi was fouled on the right flank and the ball was clearedto a corner from the free kick shot by Jamie Gatt.
