U*BET FA TROPHY: Talk of the town

Sunday sees the culmination of 20 teams trying to win the second biggest cup competition in Malta – the U*BET FA Trophy Final.

Champions Valletta and Floriana will battle it out at the National Stadium next Sunday in what is sure to be a fantastic atmosphere generated by nearly 10,000 people attending.

Much of the build-up has focused on Valletta probability of a clean sweep of the titles this year or the first cup for the Greens after 17 years.

Victory or defeat should not detract from any achievement by Michael Woods’ side; having secured a return to European competitions this week for the first time in more than 10 years. Floriana now have the chance to gain their first piece silverware under Johan Said’s first year in the driving seat.

The players will be on a high after their 2-1 win over Birkirkara last Sunday that also secured another final against Valletta next season (Super Cup). Although they will be starting off as the underdogs they will ensure that 2010/11 will go down as one of the finest in the club’s recent history.

The Floriana committee has worked wonders in transforming the Greens from a mid-table team to a squad that can look forward to European football next year.

However, they will be fully aware that they will have to overcome a hugely difficult test in the form of a Valletta side that will be spurred on by their undefeated championship victory.

Valletta have suffered just one defeat in all competitions this season (against Sliema W. in the Euro Challenge Cup), and have picked up some impressive displays throughout out the season

The match will also throw up some contrasting styles, with Valletta’s determined style complimented by the attacking threat of winger Ryan Fenech and Denni Dos Santos, up against the Green’s gritty resolve and flair created by the likes of Christian Cassar and Daniel Nwoke.

Whatever happens, it is sure to be a fantastic occasion for both sets of supporters, and with a potential triumph meaning so much to both clubs, it has the makings of a game that will go down as one of the more memorable FA Trophy finals.
