After this victory against San Ġwann, Floriana are in joint third placing with Pieta’ on 9 points from 6 games while San Ġwann are in bottom place on only 3 points from same number of games. Floriana enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges in the first paeriod while San Ġwann were the better outfit after the resumption.

The first action was created by Floriana as Zack Canilleri out-sped a defender on the right flank and San Ġwann keeper Cain Formosa neutralised the ball from his cross, and in their next action in the 10th minute they opened the score as they won a corner kick on the left flank which was well-taken by Isaac Micallef which created havoc in San Ġwann’s area and Juan Muscat netted with a hard low drive from close range.

In San Ġwann’s first action Ian Caruana served Owen Micallef with a square pass and as he tried his luck from the distance Floriana keeper Jake Taliana denied him with a diving save to a corner which was taken by Alessio Galea and Taliana saved a header by Caruana.

Floriana then mounted three more actions up to the half time whistle. Denilson Borg Castaldi was fouled on the right edge of the area and Formosa saved from the free kick by Micallef. A flag kick by the same player was cleared to another corner and Camilleri served Mattia Zarb with a through ball after dribbling past two opponents and his shot was blocked by a defender.

The first actions after restart were created by Floriana and after which San Ġwann regained the initiative and kept the Greens defending grimly up to the end. Borg Castaldi was fouled on the right flank and after the ball was cleared to a corner from the free kick by Micallef, after the same player’s flag kick Mattia Zarb missed the upright by inches from inside the area, the same player then pounced on a defensive indecision and from the edge of the area he missed the upright with Formosa beaten and Camilleri served Mattia Zarb with a cross from the left flank and Formosa saved his close-range shot.

San Ġwann regained the initiative and kept pressing until the end. Liam West served Nigel Zahra with a cross pass from the right flank and Taliana saved his effort from the distance. Galea was fouled on the left flank and the well-taken free kick by Glen Pace was headed away with difficulty. Nicky Vella dribbled past an opponent outside the area and he missed the upright with his hard drive.

In the 73rd minute San Ġwann  won a free kick on the left flank as Galea was fouled and after Pace floated a high ball in the area Owen Micallef netted with a low drive but the point was disallowed for off-side.
