Two new national marks were recorded over the weekend when a selection of the National Swimming Squad participated in the prestigious Eindhoven Swim Cup in its 10th edition between the 10th and 13th April.

Julian Harding registered a new individual record for himself in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 29.57 erasing Andrea Agius’ 29.69 the latter had set before he retired from swimming.  Nicola Muscat set a new mark in the 50free event with a time of 26.59 while her younger sibling Neil Muscat set a new age group D record in the 50 backstroke with a time of 27.60.

Nearly 750 swimmers from 172 clubs from all over the world took part in this meet – ahead of the European Championships in Berlin. The competition was fierce and the events were spread over four days with heats in the mornings and semi-finals and finals staggered in the afternoons.

With his time in the 50 breaststroke event Harding consolidated and improved the time he achieved at the Luxembourg Meet at the beginning of February which earned him an A Qualification time in said event for the upcoming Youth Olympics to be held in Nanjing in August. He further impressed in the 50m butterfly event with a personal best which also earned him another A Qualification time for said games. His 100m breaststroke just short of his national mark earned him a B qualification time.

Fast improving Raoul Stafrace set a new personal best in the 50 free event with a time of 23.95, earning him a B Qualification time, as did his efforts in the 100free and 50 breaststroke events with a respective time of  53.18 and 30.80.

Neil Muscat besides achieving an age-group record, impressed with another B Qualification time in the 50 fly with a time of 26.08.

The Maltese squad was made up of six swimmers and they were led by National Coach Andy Colbourn. These results bode well for the upcoming Easter International Meet which will be held at the National Pool Tal-Qroqq between the 24th and the 26th of April.
