The ASA National Swimming Team made up of Neil Agius, Andrea Agius, Edward Caruana Dingli, Davina Mangion, Nicola Muscat, Talisa Pace and Rhea Cutajar left Malta on Friday to attend a training camp and participate in swimming competitions being held in Lignano Sabbiadoro Italy.

ASA National Swimming Coach Andy Colbourn, who is accompanying the team, commented that this training camp will be a good preparation for the forthcoming Games of Small States being held in Leichtenstein next month.

Olympic swimmers Milorad Cavic and Jason Dunford will be also taking part in these competitions. On August 14, 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, Cavic broke the 100m butterfly Olympic record during the preliminary heats, finishing ahead of Michael Phelps and also recorded the fastest time in the semi-finals. Cavic came in second to Phelps by 1/100 of a second in the final, which was also the first medal for Serbia.

Jason Dunford is a pioneer of Kenyan swimming. In 2008, he became the first Kenyan swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games and ended up finishing fifth in the 100m butterfly.

The Malta Olympic Committee provided all the necessary assistance to the ASA for this training camp through the protocol signed with CONI.
