With a full score of 5 points from 5 games, Timothy Portelli was the worthy winner of the national under-14 chess championships held at the San Antonio Hotel and Spa in Qawra. Five rounds of fierce fighting on the board ended with Mauro Vassallo in the runner-up spot, while Gabriel Farrugia took third place.

The under-12 category saw some surprising results. Both the winner, Isaac Portelli, and the runner-up, Matthias Gatt, were eligible for lower age groups. They showed a maturity in their play which enabled them to surpass older opponents.

Michael Farrugia won the under-10 category, while Karl Ciantar was the top under-8 player. Meanwhile Jamie Farrugia was the best placed girl.

The Malta Chess Federation would like to thank the San Antonio Hotel and Spa for hosting the event.
