Malta’s Championship 1 prop forward Chris Parker arrived in Malta yesterday evening, and wasted no time in making a plea to Malta’s sports following faithful to come out and support the national team in their European competition debut against Norway later this week.

“I played my first game for Malta last October at Hamrun and I dearly want more support at our next game” said the Malta vice captain who plies his trade with English club Gateshead Thunder in Championship 1. “So you can all enjoy the spectacle that we thrive on playing” added Parker.

He was immediately joined by fellow forward and Malta captain Daniel Grima, who said “The national team is undefeated in Malta, so I am looking forward to everybody coming to cheer us on as we hope to win the European Bowl on home soil”. Grima, from St Paul’s Bay, echoed the confidence from within the Malta camp that the Knights will win their first European silverware on their debut entry to European competition.

The South End Core will be making their first appearance at a rugby league international and The Hon. Clyde Puli, Parliamentary Minister for Youth and Sport, will also join the support for the Maltese on Friday at Victor Tedesco Stadium, Hamrun.

The Norwegians fly into Malta tomorrow evening and commence training on Thursday morning at Pembroke. Norway coach Warren Heilig said yesterday his team knows what they are up against and that they’ve “worked hard at being methodical in how” they can pick apart a strong Malta team.
