The Arkadia Gozo Squash Open 2011
The Arkadia Gozo Squash Open, organised by the Gozo Squash Association, was held recently at the Kempinski Hotel and Spa Resort, San Lawrenz.

In the main ‘A’ event, Carl Camilleri from the Marsa Sports Club was never really troubled throughout the tournament and was able to secure his third title in 3 starts while Analise Attard, also from the Marsa Sports Club, took the ‘B’ title for the first time.

The semi-finals saw two contrasting matches. In the first semi-final, tournament favourite and number 1 seed Carl Camilleri won comfortably against youngster Colette Sultana. Sultana put up a courageous fight but could never really put Camilleri under any pressure. The second semi-final produced the match of the tournament between Nigel Dunkerley and Robert Sultana. The match went the full distance and could easily have gone either way. In the end Dunkerley edged out Sultana 12-10 in the final set.

In the final, Camilleri was always able to raise his game slightly against a much improved Dunkerley and managed to win his third consecutive Arkadia Gozo Squash Open.

The ‘B’ final was contested between Elaine Cauchi and Analise Attard – both from the Marsa Sports Club. Both players had comfortable semi-final victories. Attard and Cauchi train together on a regular basis and know each others game inside out. In the end, Attard managed to maintain a slight advantage winning the final 12-10 in the last set.
Worth a mention in the ‘B’ event was the performance of 11 year old Kim Cauchi. Cauchi finished an impressive 7th in her first competitive tournament and is one to watch in the future.

Gozo Squash Association president Amand P. Veranneman presented both champions with their prizes and thanked all participants for taking part and Paul Lake for the excellent organisational in what turned out to be another successful Arkadia Gozo Squash Open. Mr Veranneman also thanked Arkadia Gozo for their continued support and the Kempinski Hotel and Spa Resort for providing once again excellent facilities.

Mr Veranneman also mentioned that the next event in Gozo will be a major international open tournament with some ‘world ranked’ participants and that the planning for this event is already under way.
