As expected, the Premier class race was the main attraction during yesterday’s second meeting of the season held at the Marsa Racetrack. This race was won by favourite Think Yatzee driven by Clint Vassallo. This meeting comprised of ten events and included also a flat race on a short distance of 1250m.

Melino du Rib (Noel Baldacchino) was the fastest horse in the early stages of the class Premier race. This French eleven year old opened a length lead from Flash Coger (Julian Farrugia) and Swedish newcomer Affe Fager (Brian Zammit). But with 400m to go, Think Yatzee (Clint Vassallo) started to increase its pace and registered its second consecutive win from Flash Coger and Affe Fager. Arnie Sensation (Carmelo Farrugia) ended in fourth place. The winner clocked an average of 1.16.1” per kilometer.

Six horses lined up for the only flat race of the programme. Minnow, mounted by Michael Sultana, was the fastest out of the blocks. But 400m from the finishing line this English mare started slowing down and was overtaken by Tarruji (Oliver Briffa) which finished first by a length. Lordswood (Eric Zammt) and Irish newcomer Virginia Med (Charles Pace) finished respectively in third and fourth place.

Yesterday’s card included also two races for class Gold trotters. French debutante Nobel Pasmarick (Noel Baldacchino) sprinted well midway through the final straight of the first class Gold race. This horse obtained its first win in Malta from L’Un des Olivettes (Julian Farrugia), Big Hit (Charlo’ Debono) and French Notre Allegro (Michael Ghigo). The latter was also running in our country for the first time.

In the second class Gold race, Kojak d’Isques (Charles Camilleri) surged ahead midway through the final straight and won this race from Count of Life (Michael Ellul) and Lucky d’Hercla (Clifforty Calleja). Intrus des Rioults (Carmelo Micallef) ended in fourth place.

Another racing programme will be held next Sunday at the Marsa Racetrack. The racing card will consist of ten races all for trotters with the first race starting at 1.30pm.
