Valletta RFC take rugby to the next generation

Having seen Malta’s national rugby squad climb to 49th place in the IRB World rankings after their 27-10 win against Latvia last week, the local club scene is doing all it can to maintain momentum.  Youth development in particular, is close the hearts of everyone at Valletta Lions Rugby Club.

This Sunday, 2nd May, VLRC are organising a Rugby Fun Day for children of all ages.  The event takes place at Pieta Grounds from 2.00p.m.   All children and their parents are welcome.

Building up to Sunday’s event, players and coaches from the club attended the Saint Clara College Sports Day at the Melita Grounds last Wednesday.

Children were split into groups, given a brief introduction to the game and had fun conducting a variety of exercises.   Activity included ball passing and handling, touching down behind the try line, kicking exercises and, importantly, working as a team.

Some of the children had played rugby before and many had watched a match on TV.  Whatever their understanding of the game – one little lad thought he had to “jump” over the line to score – their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn more about the sport was terrific.

“We were delighted with the day,” commented organiser Stacey Said.  “The children really enjoyed themselves and the willingness of the kids to learn more about rugby was impressive.  It makes us even more determined to bring rugby to as wide an audience as possible.”
