The Valletta squad are now on course to end a historic season which will live long in the memory of many.
The Citizens historic run actually began amid the ruins of a failed championship bid last season. Valletta shook off the disappointment 1-0 defeat against Birkirkara which handed the title to Bkara in April 2010. No one had an idea about what would follow.
Valletta started the 2010/11 campaign as championship favourites but almost came unstuck in the second game of the season against Hiberians. Terence Scerri earned a vital late equaliser. It was the closest shave of the entire 22 game sequence.
For the most part of the season so far Valletta brushed aside all-comers this season. There were memorable wins against Birkirkara and Floriana and now they are just a few games away from their 20th championship title and the second one under president Victor Sciriha in four years. Ryan Fenech’s league debut against Sliema Wanderers in January was one of the best acquisitions for the Whites, while captain Gilbert Agius produced classic performances match day after the other when he was fit.
Victor Sciriha has built a team to win the championship. He invested in Jesmond Zerafa as the new coach after the departure of Tom Cannen. With Jonatham Caruana and Steve Borg at the back, Jamie Pace and Gilbert Agius in midfield and Denni Dos Santos partnering Terence Scerri up front, Valletta have too much ammunition and too much style for their rivals.
