Fleur de Lys and Aloysians keep top spot as Valletta win

by Sandro Micallef

The national volleyball leagues continued last weekend with three matches from the Women’s 2nd division and another three matches from the senior Men’s preliminary round.

In the first match played on Saturday from the Women’s 2nd division league, TGIF managed a narrow 3-2 win against Birkirkara. TGIF raced to a 25-19 victory in the first set but Birkirkara came back with a closely contested second set 25-22 win. The third set went TGIF’s way once again (25-12) and all seemed going their way, but they did not maintain superiority in the fourth set allowing Birkirkara back in the game with an emphatic 25-15 score. Joe Camilleri’s girls regained their composure in the fifth and final set to take the three points from this match with a 15-10 scoreline.

In the other matches from the Women’s 2nd division league, Paola’s under 18 squad brushed aside the challenge from Mellieha Tritones with a convincing 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-10, 25-19). The last game on Saturday saw Flyers Depiro II beat newcomers and 2nd division leaders Qormi 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-12), with the latter only challenging the Depiro side in the second set.

On Sunday, in the men’s Preliminary round, champions Valletta Mapei started their title defence with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) win over newcomers Attard Tenovar. The latter were always close to their rivals throughout the match except in the third set when the Citizens pulled away to win their first three points of the season.

Following their debut against Fleur de Lys, Mgarr lost their second game this season with a 3-0 scoreline to Aloysians Defenders. Aloysians were seeking to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Valletta in last week’s Super Cup final, and left little space for their less experienced opponents to impose their game, ending the match with a final score of 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.

The last game that was scheduled for Sunday evening between Sliema and Fleur De Lys was not played as the former gave their second walk-over of the season. Fleur De Lys therefore won the three points at stake to remain top of the table with Aloysians with two wins out of two matches.
