Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 16:04

The team of four bowlers currently representing Malta in the 15th Mediterranean Championships being held in San Marino, have all picked up medals in the second day of play, which saw the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles Events.
The male pairing of Mark Spiteri and Justin Caruana Scicluna fought their way hard through a very tough field over six games to claim the bronze position (3rd), with a very good team total of 2417. The winners were Greek pair, George Stefanidis and Evengelos Krizinis (2514), and the silver medals went to Gaetan Maveroux and Christophe Hachin, from France (2491).

Mark and Justin both put in much improved individuals compared to those in yesterday’s Singles event, which saw Spiteri place 16th among a total field of 26 men, while Caruana Scicluna finished down in 24th.

The Maltese ladies went one better than their male counterparts, with Sue Abela and Melissa Swift picking up the silver awards in their division with an excellent 2398 team series. They were second only to Ebru Ozogluuntur and Adile Michajlow from Turkey on 2492. Greece took third place with a 2325 tally from Martha Karatzoula and Alexandra Zorba.

A special mention must go to Melissa Swift, who bowled a fantastic 1203 individual series today, coupled with a 1195 from the vastly more experienced Sue Abela. This is Melissa’s first participation in the MCCs, while Sue has been a permanent fixture since the events inception, fourteen editions ago.

In yesterday’s singles event, Sue Abela managed a sound sixth place from 24 female participants, while Melissa Swift finished a respectable 16th.

Play continues on Friday, with the Mixed Doubles event, followed by the 4-Man Teams on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The Masters event and Finals will then be held, to decide the overall champions.
