Tennis: Tennis Europe U14 Doubles

Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC), (July 14th 2017), Alex Degabriele, one of Malta’s promising young tennis players won the Runners-Up trophy in the Tennis Europe U14 doubles tournament. Alex partnered with Spaniard Pedro Rodriguez a very talented player from Madrid. In the final Alex and Pedro lost to Italian duo Ivan La Cava and Flavio Mario Pasquariello with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7.

The final was a nail biting affair as the final score line indicates. The Italians dominated the match and took the first set quite comfortably with the score of 6-3. The Italians seemed destined to a sure victory as they had match point on 5-1 in the second set. However, Degabriele and Rodenas fought their heart out to tie the match at 6-6 in the second, eventually winning the tie break 7-5.

The super tiebreak was an intense affair as both teams exchanged some remarkable shots. The Italians kept their composure till the end to clinch the title with a final score of 10-7.

Despite their disappointment Degabriele and Rodenas were upbeat after the match, knowing that they fought till the last stroke. Asked for his comments after the match, the Maltese tennis player said “It was great competing in this final and although we didn’t win the match we gave it our all and nearly turned things around. I will cherish this experience and hopefully it will serve for my future tournaments abroad.”
