The Malta Tennis Federation today announced its Davis Cup team for the upcoming Euro Zone Group 3 event in Tallinn Estonia which will take place in March.

The team this year is a blend of youth and experience.  The team headed by Matthew Asciak along with Bradley Callus have the experience to guide the young Cassar Torregiani twins Bernard and Matthew through this major tennis team event.

Steve Caruana will be accompanying the team as National Team coach, bringing his wealth of knowledge of the event to the players.

This year will be the 8th time Asciak has been nominated to represent Malta in the Davis Cup team, having in the past played 29 matches, achieving an impressive 16 wins.

This year 16 teams will be competing in this Euro Zone event, and although the draws for the sections have not yet been made, Malta could face some tough opposition with countries like Cyprus, who might choose to  play Marco Baghdatis, world number 57 and Moldova who have the world number 127 Radu Albot avaiable.

The format is a round-robin basis of four teams that will be drawn into four pools.  The winners of each pool will enter a play-off against each other to determine which two nations are promoted to Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2017.

MTF President Dr David Farruiga Sacco said: ” Once more we are competing in the most important annual event of the International Tennis Federation.  The expectations are to improve on last years positive placing and achieve the play off stage.”
